I wanted to write up a fairly quick post about the importance and value of a DJ that seems to be overlooked quite often.
How would you like to go to your favorite club and hear no music? or hear the full version of every song?
What if your favorite party spot played satellite radio all night?
Would you have fun at a wedding or party where the host chose all the music and maybe it wasn’t very good? yet yuo had to hear the full version of every song that maybe wasn’t very good in quality either?
Well, that’s where DJ’s come in. Most have the knowledge and experience of playing music at all of these events or certain ones maybe. WE ARE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY!!!
If you didn’t have a DJ at any of the above events I mentioned playing live, nonstop, you wouldn’t have a good time.
It’s important to mention that our business is not cheap. Wehave a lot of equipment to buy such as speakers, subwoofers, lighting, turntables, controller, mixer or Cd players, microphones, wring, etc. This equipment costs us thousands and thousands of dollars if the DJ is any good. Typically 10K or more
Again, if the DJ is respectable and is any good and prides themselves on quality, we buy A LOT of music. This is our bread and butter. Buying good music and finding various versions of songs, acapellas, instrumentals, etc. This expense is ongoing and varies
Gone are the days of just being able to be a DJ. Nowadays, a DJ is: A promoter, booking manager, graphic designer (some), web designer (some), producer(some) and…….a DJ
Outsourcing graphic design for flyers, website development, schwag, business cards, music hosting, logo design, press kit, etc. is a major multi-thousand dollar expense. Again, if a DJ prides himself in being the best and building a brand, these expenses are necessary.
There is no value that can be placed here, but it’s a big factor in a DJ’s fee. Whether playing a few hours at a small event or being at a wedding for 6-10 hours, we want to be paid for our time. Weddings are the best example. The bride and groom may want you to be available for the ceremony to provide music or audio for the vows, but then have a large time gap before the reception. Then the reception lasts about 4 hours and you still have to consider the setup and tear down. It’s easily a 6 or 8 hour day. So when people only want to pay $200-$300 max for their wedding DJ, don’t be surprised if they don’t accept your offer. Again, we’re not just trying to get paid for the event, we’re trying to cover the other expenses mentioned above AND make a profit. YES, we do like to make money too!!!!
Lastly, you have various expenses every year or month for stupid stuff like: taxes, business license renewal, web hosting, insurance (some), accounting software, etc.
So….the next time you are interested in booking a DJ for whatever venue, keep in mind all of the above expenses when he quotes you a fee.
